Summary
The thyroid gland was surgically isolated in situ in young, vitamin D-depleted pigs and perfused with autologous blood under controlled conditions. The thyroid venous blood was quantitatively collected and the calcitonin (CT) concentration measured by radioimmunoassay. The addition of 25R,26-dihydroxycholecalciferol (25R,26-(OH)2D3), 25S,26-(OH)2D3 or 25RS,26-(OH)2D3) to the perfusing blood to raise the concentration by 0.65 to 10.0 ng/ml caused a significant increase in the secretion rate of CT.
