A simple synthesis for 6,6′-diamino-2,2′-bipyridine from 6,6′-dibromo-2,2′-bipyridine has been developed that does not require the use of a pressure bomb. The conversion is effected in yields of 85-95% by potassium amide in liquid ammonia with iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate as the catalyst.
