Abstract

A new alkylcatechol isolated from stem bark and leaves of Lithraea caustica (Anacardiaceae) was identified as 3-(pentadec-10-enyl)-catechol. Its structure was established by chemical and spectroscopic methods and it was shown to be the major allergenic principle of the toxic Chilean plant. In addition to the afore-mentioned compound, 3-pentadecylcatechol and two 3-heptadec(en)ylcatechols (mono and diolefin) were detected by GC and MS analysis.
