Abstract

6-Hydroxykynurenic acid (6-HKA) has been isolated from an alcoholic extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves. Its structure was verified by 13C-NMR and other spectroscopic methods. The 6-HKA content increased continuously throughout leaf development and reached a maximum value of 0.24% at leaf abscission in autumn. 6-HKA, now isolated for the first time from a gymnosperm, seems to be a main metabolite of tryptophan in Ginkgo biloba.
