Abstract
Isolation of the saponin complex from aboveground parts of Solidago gigantea Ait. var. serotina (O. Kuntze) Cronquist followed by acid hydrolysis allowed the identification of the sapogenins oleanolic acid and bayogenin. Hydrolysis of the crude saponin fraction gave α-spinasterol and 2-β-hydroxy-6-deoxy-solidagolactone IV-18, 19-olide, the latter perhaps being an artifact. The relevance of the information for the pharmaceutical use of the drug is discussed.
