Abstract

The central nervous system depressant activity of 2-Methyl-3-buten-2-ol was studied by motility tests in order to clarify if it contributes to the sedative action of hops, a folklore medicine used in Europe. 2-Me-thyl-3-buten-2-ol administered to wistar-rats caused a decline of motility by 50% when given i.p. at a dose of 206.5 mg/kg.

The onset of activity occures within two minutes reaching a miximum response within two hours.

The results obtained by the “Chimney-Test” [11] lead to the conclusion that the decrease in motility following the administration of 2-Methyl-3-buten-2-ol cannot be ascribed to a muscle relaxing effect. The effectiveness of 2-Methyl-3-buten-2-ol was compared with that of the sedative drug Methylpentynol in Open Field-Tests. Both substances, which are closely related chemically, were effective within the same dose range.
