Entscheidungen zu treffen, die die eigene Gesundheit betreffen, ist in vielen Fällen sehr schwierig. Oft befinden sich Menschen zum ersten Mal in einer spezifischen Entscheidungssituation und stehen möglicherweise unter dem Schock einer ungünstigen Diagnose. Die reine Übermittlung von Information reicht daher meist nicht aus, um diesen Menschen bei der Entscheidung zu helfen. Medizinische Entscheidungshilfen haben das Ziel, Patienten über vorhandene Behandlungsalternativen, deren Nutzen und Risiken aufzuklären, sie bei der Herausbildung individueller Präferenzen zu unterstützen, die Gespräche zwischen Patienten und medizinischem Personal zu strukturieren und konkrete Schritte zur Umsetzung der gewählten Entscheidung festzulegen.
Making decisions about one's own health may often be difficult. In many cases, people are confronted with a particular medical decision for the first time in their lives, and may also be under shock after being diagnosed with a serious disease. Solely providing information about a condition may therefore be insufficient to support decision making. Patient decision aids aim to educate patients about different treatment alternatives, including the accompanying benefits and risks. Furthermore, they aim to support patients in developing individual preferences and in forming a structured dialogue with health care professionals. Finally, they help to plan the next steps after a decision is made.
