Plasma is the compartment of the blood in which lactate from the working muscles is released and from which lactate is distributed to other tissues, e.g. blood cells, liver and non-working muscles. Therefore, it might be interesting to study plasma lactate, because it should be closer to muscle lactate that any other lactate value. However, plasma lactate is difficult to obtain and therefore whole blood lactate is used in numerous studies.
