In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein Überblick über die aktuelle Literatur zur Ätiologie und Pathogenese des Cholesteatoms gegeben, der insbesondere folgende Schwerpunkte bearbeitet: Epithelverhalten im Cholesteatom, Knochenabbau, Immunzellinfiltrate, mögliche virale Genese, Zytokeratinexpression, Gefäßmorphologie des Cholesteatoms sowie die Rolle verschiedener Wachstumsfaktoren und Zytokine

This review provides an overview relating to recent literature on etiology and pathogenesis of middle ear cholesteatoma, and Covers the following areas: the behaviour of cholesteatoma epithelium, bone resorption, infiltrating immune cells, possible role of viruses, expression of cytokeratins, vascular morphology of cholesteatoma, and the role of growth factors and cytokines, respectively
