Abstract
The stereotactic image-guided radiotherapy is a modern image-guided irradiation technique which use external coordinate systems and allows a highly selective radiation of target volumes with only minor side effects. This treatment is established for radiotherapy of brain tumors and is used more frequently also in extracranial tumors (e. g. lung cancer, liver tumor, prostate cancer). The success of the stereotactic treatment depends on the precision of the target definition. As addition to the CT and MRI, PET delivers important information on tumour metabolism; there is a growing interest in the application of PET imaging for planning the stereotactic radiation therapy. This presented work reviews indications, technical requirements and applications of PET for planning radiosurgery of brain tumours and the stereotactic body radiation therapy.
