Abstract

This chapter gives a surgical perspective on the use of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) prostheses versus homologous venous grafts for hemodialysis. The article describes the specific surgical indications for the use of a vascular prosthesis in these patients and where to implant the prosthesis; (i.e., specifically where in the forearm or whether a femoral approach should be used). The authors describe their experience with the types of material used for vascular prostheses.
