International Archives of Otorhinolaryngology Journal

Editorial - Volume 15 (3) – Jul/Aug/Sept - 2011

Dear Colleague,

The Basic Research has achieved an increasing space in clinical-surgical Journals, as well as in otorhinolaryngological events worldwide. In the United States of America, there is the Association of Research in Otorhinolaryngology (ARO), founded in 1973, which held a yearly Conference with the intention to divulging mostly basic otorhinolaryngology-related works. In 2011, this event took place in the city of Baltimore, Maryland; some of the most noteworthy topics that were approached are the mechanisms and diseases of the middle and external ear, the models to survey the ear, the auditory physiopathology, tinnitus, models of hearing prostheses, and vestibular receivers, among others. Many of these studies made use of transgenic rats and mice, zebrafishes and chinchillas. The aforementioned Conference stands out for its magnitude in the clinical otorhinolaryngology-related basic and applied research in that country, with 1,038 works presented in the event, most of which were in the otologic and otoneurologic areas.

In this number of Archives Journal, nearly 80 % of the articles are in the otological area, making the ongoing progress in the clinical research of this Otorhinolaryngological subarea evident between us. Nevertheless, we call your attention to the basic research that is increasingly performed on a global basis to clarify diagnoses and perform therapeutic tests in wide-ranging areas of specialization. For this purpose, we need to foment research in a growing and continuous way, by teasing, in the good sense, the financial agencies (CAPES, CNPq, FAPESP, among others).

The International Archives of Otorhinolaryngology Journal, in the year 2011, shall award works of systematic review (Metanalysis), in an attempt to emphasize models of articles forming the basis and concepts of universal knowledge.

The competing works shall obligatorily be published in the issues 1-4 of the volume 15, in the year 2011. Rules for prize competition are found in this Journal.
