The 2nd edition of this useful book for medical students comes 4 years after the 1st edition with expanded and updated information in addition to new chapters. Like its predecessor, it is full of easy-to-remember mnemonics that are related to the list they are for: e.g., APPENDICITIS for causes of right lower quadrant pain, RHEUMATOIDS for the extra-articular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis. The pictures and illustrations are colored and simple and most are clear. The last chapters are of pathognomonic signs and symptoms, and screening guidelines, the latter is especially useful for doctors as well.
Indeed, though the primary target readership is medical students, it will be handy for junior doctors studying for postgraduate examinations, or simply an aide-memoire for those trying to survive the busy hospital work. It is smaller than standard medical textbooks, but still too big and heavy to be carried in a white coat pocket, though I understand a handbook for that purpose is on the way soon.
As usual, Prof. Rifat has interspersed the pages with jokes and humorous anecdotes. My favorite is “Nurse to Dr: There's a man outside who wants to see you, he says he's invisible. Dr: Tell him I can't see him today.” I suppose the man will suddenly reappear to get a consult, thus negating the need for it.
