Abstract

Introduction The article describes skeletal open bite corrections of minor and moderate severity with the help of maxillary molar intrusion as a method of indirect bite deepening.

Material and methods Two case reports are used to describe in detail the applied intrusion mechanisms and clinical procedures. Anchoring was performed with mini-implants in the anterior palate.

Results Correction of the open bite was primarily performed by molar intrusion and subsequent autorotation of the mandible. Two years after active treatment the correction of the open bite was observed to be stable.

Conclusion Correction of the skeletal open bite with mini-implant supported mechanics represents an alternative to combined orthodontic and maxillofacial surgery for minor and moderate manifestations. Due to the expected relapse after molar intrusion, overcorrection and an effective retention strategy seem desirable.
