Art in Endoscopy: “Alien”

Two tubular adenomas were encountered very close to each other in the sigmoid colon. In order to perform endoscopic mucosal resection with both polyps being removed in just one piece, the submucosal layer was injected with indigo carmine. The two polyps resembled the eyes of an alien just peeking around the corner.

“Art in Endoscopy” is an initiative of four gastroenterologists in training that aims to display examples of the incidentally beautiful images that are sometimes encountered in regular endoscopic practice.

Depicted is a segment of normal sigmoid colon; the blue “head” is normal tissue stained with indigo carmine; the red eyes of the alien are two small polyps.
