Baohong Yang et al. Endoscopic retrograde appendicitis therapy versus laparoscopic appendectomy for uncomplicated acute appendicitis
Endoscopic retrograde appendicitis therapy (ERAT), a novel treatment for uncomplicated acute appendicitis involving colonoscopy and irrigation and/or stenting of the appendix, was retrospectively compared with laparoscopic appendectomy. Hospital stay and post-procedure pain were lower with ERAT while adverse event rates were similar. However, 7.9% of ERAT patients had recurrent appendicitis or needed surgery by 1 year. Prospective studies, including comparison with antibiotic treatment, are needed.
