Background

Dermal fillers are commonly used in aesthetic medicine to enhance and contour facial features. Appealing features of these interventions consist in minimal downtime compared to surgical procedures and the reversibility of its effects with many subtypes of fillers. Accidental intravascular injection in nonsurgical rhinoplasty and the glabella area with a hyaluronic acid- (HA) or calcium hydroxyapatite-based filler with subsequent occlusion of retinal vessels is a very rare, yet increasingly frequent, complication associated with blindness.
