Die Protothekose ist eine bei Hunden sehr selten vorkommende Erkrankung. Die bei dieser Tierart am häufigsten anzutreffende disseminierte Form hat eine schlechte Prognose, eine frühzeitige Diagnose kann jedoch die Erfolgsaussichten einer Therapie verbessern.
