Bedeutung von Gestenrezeption und -produktion beim Worterwerb
Importance of Gesture Reception and Production in Word Acquisition
Abstract
Speech-accompanying iconic gestures support novel word learning. In a multimodal intervention study, the process of novel word learning of 42 kindergarten children is analyzed regarding their gestural naming behavior as well as the transfer from gesture to spoken language. The study focusses on the influence of gesture reception compared to gesture production on the acquisition of novel words. Children use gesture input as a “stepping stone” to spoken language regardless of whether they have only seen the gestures or produced them themselves.
