Pernille T. Larsen et al. Detection of colorectal cancer and advanced neoplasia during first surveillance interval after detection of adenomas in fecal immunochemical test cancer screening: a nationwide study

Participants who underwent fecal immunochemical test (FIT) screening with adenoma findings and a follow-up colonoscopy (n = 10 068) were categorized as high risk (surveillance after 1 year) or intermediate risk (surveillance after 3 years). The intermediate risk group (n = 5504) were further categorized as no surveillance (NS) or surveillance (S), based on the 2020 European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy guidelines. Colorectal cancer was found in 0.59% of high risk vs. 1.11% intermediate risk patients, and in 1.69% of intermediate-NS vs. 0.87% intermediate-S patients. This study finds that the first colonoscopy after a FIT screening may not sufficiently guide surveillance and underlines that continued efforts to improve colonoscopy quality are essential.
