Background
Immediate and accurate methods to assess surgical margins during breast conserving surgery (BCS) are needed to reduce the proportion of patients undergoing a re-operation due to DCIS and/or cancer-positive margins. Previous studies suggested that the Histolog Scanner (HLS) confocal medical device is a promising tool to address this need. The SHIELD study is conducted to prospectively quantify the reduction of the re-operation rate of BCS on 50 patients. Here we are presenting the interim results from the first 30 patients.
