Zahlreiche Fortschritte unserer Zivilisation basieren auf der Verwendung von Plastik. Ein Alltag ohne Plastik ist heute nicht mehr vorstellbar. Entsprechend stieg die weltweite Produktion seit dem 2. Weltkrieg exponentiell an, von weniger als 2 Millionen Tonnen Plastik im Jahr 1950, auf derzeit ca. 400 Millionen. Bis 2060 wird eine weitere Verdreifachung erwartet.
