Spontaneous Closure of Macular Hole Following Rhegmatogenous Macula-Off Retinal Detachment
Spontaner Verschluss eines Makulaloches nach Makula-off rhegmatogener NetzhautablösungPublication History

Background
Macular holes can be caused by various etiologies, such as idiopathic, traumatic, vitreous or epiretinal membrane traction, and postoperative, e. g. after scleral buckling, pneumatic retinopexy and vitrectomy [1] [2] [3] [4] [5].
Spontaneous closure of an idiopathic macular hole has been described in a small percent of cases [6], and traumatic macular holes appear to close spontaneously slightly more frequently compared to idiopathic macular holes [7].
Macular hole formation after successful retinal detachment surgery with vitrectomy is a very rare occurrence [8], [9]. We describe the clinical situation where a rhegmatogenous macula-off retinal detachment triggered the formation of a full-thickness macular hole during the postoperative stage, which showed a spontaneous resolution within 1 month.
