Summary
The assessment and evaluation of pain in horses plays an important role in veterinary practice, not only in terms of their treatment but also under ethical and animal welfare aspects. Besides physiological parameters, it is especially an alteration in the horses' behaviour, gesture, and facial expressions which indicate the presence of painful processes. Horse-owners with a well-established human-animal-relationship are able to provide the horse practitioner with important information for the assessment of pain in an individual horse. A generally applicable pain scale as has already been established for dogs should also be developed for horses.
