Fohlen entsprechen nicht einfach kleinen Pferden, sie unterscheiden sich in anatomischer und physiologischer Hinsicht. Gerade bei neugeborenen Fohlen sind diese Unterschiede besonders ausgeprägt. Zudem handelt es sich bei den Operationen oft um Notfalleingriffe, sodass man kranken oder traumatisierten Patienten mit unreifen Körperfunktionen gegenübersteht.
