Es stehen derzeit hauptsächlich 3 Techniken der flexiblen Dünndarmendoskopie im Zentrum des Interesses: die Doppelballonenteroskopie (DBE), die Singleballonentero-skopie (SBE) und die Spiralenteroskopie (SE). Die DBE hat sich weltweit sowohl als diagnostisches als auch als therapeutisches Verfahren etabliert. Inzwischen werden aber auch die SBE und die SE vermehrt zur Dünndarmevaluation eingesetzt.
