Summary

The nature and possible meaning of suffering are examined within the context of a semi-anthropomorphic model of the universe as a series of interacting levels or wholes, nested one within another. This is exemplified by considering the different behaviours of a) iron and oxygen, in their native states and in haemoglobin, and b) normal and cancerous cells. The role of consciousness and some consequences for homeopaths are discussed
