Our guest editor, Dr. Dan Lebovic, is a world-renowned physician-scientist and reproductive endocrinologist who has dedicated his career to studying the molecular and translational aspects of endometriosis. His impressive published body of work on the immunobiology of endometriosis has been widely acknowledged. He is currently conducting primate studies and human clinical trials to develop novel treatments for the disease.
Since 2008, Dr. Lebovic has been serving as an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He is California raised and educated although has been fortunate enough to enjoy several great U.S. cities throughout his studies. He received a medical degree from the George Washington School of Medicine in 1992 after completing a master's program in endocrinology at the University of California, Berkeley. He served a surgical internship in New Hampshire at Dartmouth University before moving to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the University of Virginia to finish an obstetrics and gynecology residency in 1996. He completed his subspecialty training in REI at the University of California, San Francisco, in 1998 and remained as an adjunct assistant professor until the summer of 2000 when he joined the REI Division at the University of Michigan and eventually obtained tenure while also assuming the role as assistant residency program director from 2003 until 2008.
Throughout his career Dr. Lebovic has received numerous training awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Most notably, he has received an individual career development award as faculty to study immunomodulation and allo-autoimmunity of endometriosis. He currently conducts NIH- and industry-funded novel molecular studies and clinical trials in endometriosis.
Dr. Lebovic has authored >40 peer-reviewed papers, primarily on endometriosis. He currently serves on the editorial board of Fertility and Sterility. Dr. Lebovic has spoken nationally and internationally on endometriosis. He is the author of the Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility: Handbook for Clinicians. He has served as chair of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Endometriosis Special Interest Group, and he was the 2011 Society for Gynecologic Investigation scientific program director.
