Introduction
We report the imaging findings obtained in a newborn with severe urinary retention of unknown cause. Ultrasound, which is typically conclusive in this situation, could not reveal the correct diagnosis in this case. Subsequently, the infant underwent a rapid magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study in search of the cause of the severe urinary retention. MRI quickly provided the diagnosis of an obstructing ureterocele, a congenital malformation, which is frequently found as a cause of urinary retention in newborns and young infants.
