In der anthroposophischen Medizin werden außer den diagnostischen und therapeutischen Verfahren der Schulmedizin zusätzlich spezielle anthroposophische Arzneimittel (v. a. Homöopathika) und Therapieverfahren angewendet, wie z. B. äußere Anwendungen, Ernährung, Heileurythmie, künstlerische Therapien, rhythmische Massagen und Biografiearbeit. Damit steht die anthroposophische Medizin nicht in Opposition zur konventionellen Medizin, sondern ergänzt diese. Sie bezieht die Patienten als Gestalter ihrer Gesundheit aktiv in den Heilungsprozess ein. Die eingesetzten Heilmittel sollen hierbei die Selbstheilungskräfte des Körpers unterstützen.

Insbesondere Krebspatienten möchten zunehmend die Möglichkeiten der anthroposophischen Medizin – insbesondere in Form der Misteltherapie – in den Behandlungsplan integrieren, um die Heilung zu fördern, Nebenwirkungen der konventionellen Medizin zu lindern und an Lebensqualität zu gewinnen. Zahlreiche Studien belegen die positiven Effekte der Misteltherapie im Rahmen der Evidence-based Medicine auf Gesamtüberleben, Verträglichkeit onkologischer Therapien, Immunmodulation und Lebensqualität.
