Karzinome des Ösophagus zeigen eine gleichbleibende Inzidenz bei Plattenepithelkarzinomen und eine ansteigende Inzidenz bei Adenokarzinomen. Magenkarzinome sind nach wie vor häufige Tumorarten, obwohl die Inzidenz der Magenkarzinome in der westlichen Welt in den letzten Jahrzehnten erheblich zurückgegangen ist. Neue Therapiemöglichkeiten machen auch eine Aktualisierung der Tumorklassifikationen notwendig.

Carcinomas of the oesophagus show a continuous incidence of squamous cell carcinomas and a rise of incidence of adenocarcinomas in the last decades. Stomach carcinomas are still frequently occurring tumours although the incidence of stomach carcinoma has declined in recent decades. New treatment modalities request an update of tumour classifications.
