Ethical Dilemmas at the Bedside: How Do We Decide?

This is the first reply to Gansera et al's provocative article on “High-risk cardiac surgery in patients with intravenous drug abuse and/or active hepatitis C or HIV infection”[1] apart from the Invited Commentaries already published. We hope to receive more Letters-to-the-Editor and shall therefore publish the original authors' reply at a later date, then discussing both invited and spontaneous comments.
