Summary

Rumination is symptom of and factor of vulnerability to psychiatric disorders. Based on different psychological models, new psychotherapeutic interventions against depressive rumination were developed over the last years which showed positive effects. Increased functional connectivity between the Default-Mode-Network and subgenual prefrontal cortex has been described as a neural correlate of rumination. In this article we illuminate historical aspects of the psychopathological phenomenon rumination, summarize definitions, psychological models and interventions of rumination and describe new neurobiological findings.
