Gegenstand und Ziel: Die Arbeit gibt einen Literaturüberblick über die möglichen Diagnosen zum Leitsymptom “Umfangsvermehrung am Unterkiefer” hinsichtlich Tumoren, Knochenzyste und Periostitis. Anschließend werden aus diesem Teilkomplex fünf Fallbeispiele und deren Diagnostik beschrieben. Material und Methoden: Diefünf Fallberichte stammen aus dem Patientengut der Klinikfür Pferde der Freien Universität Berlin der letzten 10 Jahre. Ergebnisse: Es gibt viele unterschiedliche Differenzialdiagnosen zum Leitsymptom “Umfangsvermehrung am Unterkiefer”. Wenig beeinträchtigende Erkrankungen (z. B. periostale Hyperostose) kommen genauso vor wie hochmaligne Neoplasien (z. B. Osteosarkom). Die eindeutige Diagnose kann in vielen Fällen nur durch eine histopathologische Untersuchung erfolgen oder nach einem langen Beobachtungszeitraum. Schlussfolgerung und klinische Relevanz: Das Leitsymptom “Umfangsvermehrung am Unterkiefer” erfordert eine umfangreiche Diagnostik. Neben der allgemeinen und klinischen Untersuchung liefert die Röntgenuntersuchung die meisten Informationen. Bei der Tumordifferenzierung istdie Biopsie und bei der Knochenzyste zusätzlich die Untersuchung der Zystenflüssigkeit von Bedeutung.

Summary:

Objective: This article gives an overview of the literature regarding differential diagnoses of the cardinal symptom “swelling of the lowerjaw” with respect to tumours, bone cyst and periostitis. This is followed by five case studies on this subject and discussion of their diagnostic procedures. Material and methods: The presented horses were patients of the equine clinic of the Freie Universität Berlin in the last ten years. Results: Concerning the cardinal symptom “swelling of the lower jaw” many different differential diagnoses need to be considered. Both benign diseases (periostal hyperostosis) and malignant tumours (osteosarcoma) occur. A histopathologic examination is often necessary for the exact diagnosis, or the diagnosis is finally made after a long period of observation. Conclusions and clinical relevance: With the cardinal symptom “swelling of the lowerjaw” extensive diagnostic procedure is necessary. Besides general and clinical examination, radiographs give the most information. For tumourdifferentiation the biopsy and for bone cysts the examination of the cystic liquid is important.
