Summary:
Objective: Case report, characterisation of symptoms, diagnostics and therapy of an oral squamous cell carcinoma broken through the orbit. Material and methods: A 15-year-old domestic shorthair cat underwent clinical, opthalmic, radiologic and cytologic examination. The cytological diagnosis was confirmed in post mortal macroscopic and histologic examinations. Results: Clinical examination revealed exophthalmos, exposition keratitis and lagophthalmos. Investigation of the oral cavity exposed a mass in the caudal area of the left upper jaw. The cytologic diagnosis of a squamous cell carinoma was made. Radiographs of the head showed osteolysis of the skull. Due to the poor prognosis the owner decided to euthanize the cat. Post mortem macroscopic and histologic examination confirmed the cytologic diagnosis. Conclusion and clinical relevance: To recognise the reason for a retrobulbar mass that causes exophthalmos, a thorough clinical and ophthalmologic examination is necessary. In addition further measures such as imaging and cytology or biopsy are needed.
