Bei vielen Augenerkrankungen ist der dauerhafte Erhalt eines blinden und/oder schmerzhaften Auges nicht umsetzbar. Nur die operative Entfernung des betroffenen Auges kann einen schmerzfreien Zustand des Tieres herbeiführen. Die transkonjunktivale Operationstechnik wird aufgrund ihrer Vorteile häufiger als die transpalpebrale Technik angewandt. Bei beiden Techniken werden Bulbus, Lider, Konjunktiven und Nickhaut reseziert und der Wundbereich durch eine permanente Tarsorrhaphie verschlossen. Bei einer sorgfältig chirurgisch durchgeführten Enukleation treten nur sehr selten spezifische Komplikationen auf.
