Abstract

This article presents an algorithm to treat and manage ethanol intoxications during the Munich “Oktoberfest”, known as one of the biggest carnivals worldwide with approximately 6.5 million visitors consuming 7 million liters of beer and unaccountable other alcoholic beverages. Whereas only 18% of approximately 4000 patients need treatment for ethanol overdosing, relevant comorbidity, a busy outpatient setting and other intoxications demand a structured effort to approach these patients. This algorithm has been used for the past 6 years and could be useful for managing similar settings. It is based on established structured approaches – ABCDE – to the patient and establishes cut-off values for in-patient treatment and invasive measures.
