Biografie
Otto Wichterle ([Abb. 1]) wurde am 27. Oktober 1913 in Prostějov, im damaligen Österreich-Ungarn, als Sohn einer Kaufmannsfamilie geboren. Er absolvierte die 8 Jahre Gymnasium und wollte nach dem Abitur zunächst Maschinenbau studieren. Doch seine Freunde rieten ihm zum Chemiestudium, das er dann 1935 abschloss. Noch vor 1936 machte er seinen Dr. phil. in organischer Chemie [1].
