Dr. Patrick Georgoff is an Acute Care and Trauma Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Duke University in Durham, NC. He was born and raised in Michigan, played lots of hockey during his youth on its frozen ponds, and remains a lifelong “Go Blue” fan. Patrick attended the University of Michigan for undergraduate, where he received his BS degree in Movement Science in the School of Kinesiology. He then went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, for medical school prior to going back to the University of Michigan for his General Surgery Residency. During this time, he spent 2 years performing dedicated trauma surgery research under the mentorship of Dr. Hasam Alam, as well as completing a surgical critical fellowship. He then performed his Trauma Surgery fellowship at the University of Texas Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX. Following graduation, Patrick practiced acute care and trauma surgery at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, NC, for 3 years prior to going to Duke.

Patrick's clinical practice includes trauma, emergency general surgery, critical care, and elective abdominal wall reconstruction. He thoroughly enjoys clinical work, including caring for the sickest of the sick as a self-described, “trauma junky.” His academic work focuses on the creation and delivery of innovative surgical education content using new technology, such as his recent creation of a trauma video atlas using perfused fresh cadavers, all shot in high-definition video and delivered via a custom-built app. He has multiple peer-reviewed publications and have given numerous lectures regionally and nationally in the field of trauma and acute care surgery. He is passionate about all aspects of surgical education including content creation, simulation, curriculum development, and quality improvement.

I was lucky enough to meet Patrick through his dedicated work initially as a consultant with our podcast Behind the Knife. His vision, drive, creativity, and innovative approach have led to him joining our team as a co-director over the last several years, and ultimately to the growth of our multiplatform educational endeavor spanning the globe. He and his wife, Lisa (who also has been an incredible administrative partner in BTK), have two children (Connor and Kayla). Outside of medicine, they enjoy hiking, biking, paddle boarding, skiing, and exercising.

On behalf of the readers and staff of Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery, I want to sincerely thank Dr. Georgoff for serving as a Guest Editor and for providing us with an incredible issue on Acute Care Surgery.
