Hypothyroidism in Older Adults, Glucocorticoid Withdrawal, Diabetic Heart Disease, and More
Welcome to the third issue of the year 2024, the seventh year of Journal of Diabetes and Endocrine Practice (JDEP). The current issue has several review articles, a single original article, and two short contributions.
The four reviews address several topical issues in endocrine practice. Elbo-Iswadi et al review the diagnostic and prognostic value of cardiac markers in people with diabetes. Khaled M.A. Aldahmani et al provide a contemporary perspective on impulse control disorder in dopamine agonist–treated patients in endocrine practice. Kamal Abouglila provides a concise review of the recent literature (latest 5 years) on impact and management of hypothyroidism in older adults. Mohammed S. Alenezi et al used a case-based approach to consider safely withdrawing the systemic glucocorticoid therapy.
The single original article in the issue, by Salem A. Beshyah et al, presents a survey of physicians from three developing regions on the impact of patient's age on the management of hypothyroidism in adults.
The two case reports/clinical vignettes illustrate the impact of Ramadan fasting and feasting on glycemic control using flash glucose monitoring data by Aljunaibi and Afandi and a very rare liraglutide-induced dermatological adverse reaction in the treatment of obesity by Alam et al.
Although the journal has continued to come out on time regularly with a fairly good collection of articles of topical subjects on contemporary issues in clinical endocrine practice and regional concerns, the editors are concerned that the flow of submissions is still too low considering the size of the constituent region, the open access policy, and the totally free submission process. Yet, the Gulf Association of Endocrinology and Diabetes, the editors, and Thieme are committed to persevere with the mission as stated in our maiden issue many years ago. We hope this commitment will resonate with a recipient audience in the endocrine communities in our region and beyond.
