Abstract

These are the abstracts of the free communications of the Sixth Libyan Diabetes Conference, held on November 14–16, 2024. It was hosted by the Medical School, Tripoli, Libya. They are presented here to reach a wider audience. They mostly provide some insights into clinical practices and research in diabetes care, mostly from Libya. They blend care reports, observational studies, and a few experimental exercises. We hope this study documents the current research interests in the country and stimulates early communication between those with mutual research interests in and outside the country even before the presented work is fully published.

Introduction

Diabetes, obesity, and cardiometabolic disorders are major challenges to the health care systems in the Middle East and North Africa, including Libya.1 Therefore, these noncommunicable diseases are among the health care priorities. The Sixth Annual Libyan Diabetes Conference was held on November 14–16, 2024, at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tripoli, Tripoli, Libya. Its educational objectives are to keep the delegates informed about the latest developments in diabetes care. In addition to the didactic plenary lectures and interactive clinical practice workshops, abstracts on research and clinical practice were invited for free communication as oral communications or posters. At least two peer reviewers reviewed them.

This short article presents the abstracts of the conference’s free communications. They are presented here to give them a wider audience. They mostly provide some insights into clinical practices and research in diabetes and endocrinology, mostly from Libya. They blend care reports, observational studies, and a few experimental exercises similar to the previous year’s conference2 and other regional general or more focused conferences.3-7

We hope this study documents the current diabetes research interests in the country and stimulates early communication between those with mutual interests in and outside the country even before the presented work is fully published.

Conclusion

Although the free communications of the Sixth Libyan Diabetes Conference are few, they reflect the overall state of the country, its recent civil and armed conflicts, and its unstable political environment. They provided some insights into patterns of clinical practices in diabetes care and related research interests. Predictably, they were mostly from Libya. They blend care reports, observational studies on the processes and outcomes of diabetes care, a few experimental exercises mostly on the impact of education and use of technology, and at least one systematic review. They blend case reports, observational studies, and experimental exercises similar to other regional general medical or more focused conferences. We hope that early publishing here will stimulate more in-depth and larger studies to address the peculiarities of diabetes and its care in Libya and wider concepts.
