Sleep Science was established in 2008 under the name Hypnos by Brazilian researchers to represent the scientific sleep community of Latin America. It became the official journal of the Brazilian Sleep Academy (Academia Brasileira do Sono – ABS, in Portuguese) and the Federation of Latin American Sleep Societies (FLASS). Over the years, the journal has achieved indexation in prestigious databases, such as Scopus, DOAJ, PubMed, PMC, and Web of Science. As an international, interdisciplinary, online, and open-access journal, Sleep Science has grown in recognition across various research communities globally.

I have been the Editor-in-Chief of Sleep Science since 2010, an important moment for the journal when it was renamed from Hypnos to its current title. Over these 14 years, I have had the opportunity to witness and contribute to the journal's remarkable progress, working closely with the Editorial Board to maintain high standards of quality, and always prioritizing the ethical principles upon which the journal was founded as well as the interests of our readers.

In its early days, the journal used to receive fewer submissions, which predominantly comprised Brazilian studies. However, in recent years, this landscape has shifted, being characterized by a greater number of submissions from a more diverse range of countries, thus reflecting an array of perspectives from across the globe. The journal has reached new audiences, gaining a reputation as a democratic and accessible platform for the dissemination of sleep and chronobiology research information. Its open-access model, free of publication fees, has enhanced its reach significantly, benefiting particularly postgraduate programs, students, and developing scientific institutions.

Throughout these years, the journal partnered with various publishers, including GN1, Elsevier, and, most recently, Thieme (the current publisher). These changes in publishers were implemented to facilitate access for authors and reviewers as well as to provide a more user-friendly, modern platform, particularly for our readers. In 2023, Sleep Science achieved its first impact factor, an important milestone in the journal's growth and recognition, especially as a Latin American journal.

A key aspect that needs to be mentioned regarding the journal's success is its diverse Editorial Board, which consists of researchers from numerous countries. This diversity enriches the journal's goals and mission by enabling the integration of a broad range of ideas, insights, and local scientific knowledge from around the world. Another factor that has promoted the development of the journal is the support it has received from ABS and Associação Fundo de Incentivo à Pesquisa (AFIP), both financial and otherwise, that has fostered the journal's dissemination and growth. I would like to thank these two institutions for their consistent support over the years. I would also like to thank Isabela Ishikura, the current Managing Editor, and all the Managing and Associate Editors for their valuable assistance over the years, which contributed to the success of Sleep Science.

As I conclude my tenure as Editor-in-Chief of Sleep Science, I reflect with pride on the journey that I shared with the Editorial Board, authors, reviewers, and readers and thank them all for their support. I would also like to take this occasion to announce that from January 2025 I will start a new journey as Editor-in-Chief of Sleep Medicine Reviews. The experience I gained at Sleep Science has been invaluable in advancing my professional career.

I am honored to announce that Prof. Claudia Castro Moreno, currently an Associate Editor of Sleep Science, will assume the position of Editor-in-Chief of the journal. Prof. Moreno is a distinguished Professor at Universidade de São Paulo, with extensive experience in chronobiology. I am very happy to have her succeeding me at Sleep Science, and I wish her all the success as she embarks on this challenging and rewarding journey.
