Pathology of soft tissue tumors.
The term soft tissue comprises all non-epithelial, extraskeletal and neuroectodermal tissues of the peripheral and autonomic nervous system. Soft tissue tumors are classified by assigning them to the tissue of origin. Any histological category determined in this way is subdivided into a benign and a malignant group. In addition, the malignant tumors are classified into low, moderately and highly malignant lesions. Based on these principles, the classification of soft tissue tumors is basically logically structured. However, in practical diagnostics, the conventional histological methods are often limited when it comes to assigning the tumor to the tissue of origin and, in particular, tumor differentiation. Over the past 10 to 15 years, immunohistological methods have been developed that have considerably improved the diagnostics-related application possibilities. Increasingly, molecular genetic methods are being established that are beneficial for diagnosing soft tissue tumors.
