Hemopure® (HBOC-201, hemoglobin glutamer - 250, bovine), a room temperature stable hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier requiring no typing or cross-matching, has been approved in South Africa for the treatment of surgical anemia in adults. The bovine derived polymerized hemoglobin (13 g/dL), in a balanced salt solution, is packaged in 250 ml flexible bag units for intravenous infusion. The product has a dose dependent plasma half-life of 24 to 36 hours, and has been shown in numerous preclinical and clinical studies to transport oxygen effectively.
