There are a few privileges for the editor of Seminars in Reproductive Medicine. Over the next year a number of issues will be guest edited by my former fellows in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, where I have been since 1978.

It is with great pleasure that I introduce Dr. Aydin Arici, who graduated from Istanbul medical school in Turkey and then completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. It was from there that I recruited Aydin to a fellowship in REI in Dallas, where his academic career began to flourish. His original research was focused on the molecular biology of the endometrium. After his fellowship he joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University Medical School, where the focus of his research was the regulation of endometrial growth and the biology of endometriosis. Dr. Arici rose through the ranks and is currently a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of the Section of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Yale University Medical School.

Dr. Arici is the recipient of many National Institutes of Health and pharmaceutical industry-sponsored research grants and has trained approximately 60 postdoctoral fellows. His clinical research focuses on the pathogenesis of endometriosis, in particular the investigation of cellular and molecular mechanisms in endometrial physiology and pathology. He is a member of the editorial board of Fertility and Sterility and serves as a reviewer for more than 20 scientific journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Biology of Reproduction, and Journal of Clinical Investigation. Dr. Arici's more than 155 articles have been published in these and other leading journals and his book chapters have appeared in such texts as Endometrium and Endometriosis, Textbook of Reproductive Endocrinology. He is a frequent invited speaker and has presented at numerous national and international medical and scientific symposia.

In this issue on the “Biology and Clinical Aspects of Endometriosis,” Dr Arici has recruited a superb list of authors for this unusually large issue of Seminars in Reproductive Medicine. The authors are national and international experts in the field of endometriosis. It is hoped that this issue will have up-to-date information that will serve students and researchers in this important area of reproductive medicine.
