This issue of Seminars in Hearing was initiated by Ellen Kurtzer-White, a pediatric audiologist practicing in Rhode Island at that time. Ellen passed away shortly after asking for contributions. It was difficult to continue without her expertise, but we continue to share her inspiration. We dedicate this issue to her memory.
In March 2004, the annual conference of the Rhode Island Hearing Assessment Program, entitled “Creating Positive Environments: Professionals and Parents Partnering for the Success of Children with Hearing Loss,” was also dedicated to Ellen's legacy. At that conference, her long-time collaborator and friend, David Luterman, D.Ed., made introductory remarks that he kindly gave permission to print here:
