Summary
The wetting of prepared, moist tooth structure during impression taking is an important process, which strongly influences the quality of the finished impression. Several material properties of wash materials have an influence on this wetting process, while 2 material properties have a major impact: The rheological properties (viscosity, thixotropy, flow properties) and the hydrophilicity. The word hydrophilicity describes the kind of interaction between a surface and water. Hydrophilic surfaces form contact angles < 90° with water.
The word hydrophilicity has gained popularity during the recent years, since vps-materials are hydrophobic with regard to their basic chemistry. As this material inherent shortcoming became obvious, manufacturers started to add surfactants to the impression materials to make them hydrophilic. Nowadays most vps-materials are hydrophilized. The kind and amount of surfactants incorporated have a major effect on the hydrophilic properties of an impression material. The aim of the study was to determine the hydrophilicity of various vps- and polyether impression materials by measuring the contact angle with distilled water on set and unset specimens.
