Bildgebende Verfahren und die Verarbeitung syntaktischer Information

Zusammenfassung

Eine essenzielle Voraussetzung für das Verstehen eines Satzes ist die erfolgreiche Analyse seiner Struktur, d. h. der formalen Abfolge- und Abhängigskeitsbeziehungen, die zwischen den in ihm vorkommenden Elementen bestehen. Wie diese unter dem Terminus Syntax zusammengefassten Phänomene neuronal implementiert sind, ist dementsprechend auch seit etwa einem Jahrzehnt eine der zentralen Fragen in der Sprachforschung mit bildgebenden Verfahren. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wurde dabei dem so genannten Broca-Areal und seiner Rolle bei der Verarbeitung syntaktischer Information zuteil. Der vorliegende Artikel stellt bildgebende Studien zu den zwei in diesem Zusammenhang wichtigsten experimentellen Paradigmen vor: Der Verarbeitung von syntaktisch fehlerhaften Sätzen sowie Sätzen, die eine ungewöhnliche Wortstellung enthalten. Es wird dafür argumentiert, dass neuronale Sprachverarbeitung nur in einem dynamischen Modell verstanden werden kann, in dem neben der räumlichen Lokalisation auch die zeitliche Struktur der Verarbeitung Berücksichtigung findet. Dies bedarf der Ergänzung der bildgebenden Methoden mit zeitsensitiveren Verfahren, wie etwa ereigniskorrelierten Hirnpotentialen.

Abstract

One of the fundamental aspects during sentence comprehension is to analyse sentence structure, that is, to detect the formal dependencies which exist between the elements in a sentence. Accordingly, the question of how this so-called syntactic information is neuronally implemented has become a major topic in neuroimaging research on language in the past decade. Especially, the so-called Broca’s Area and its role in syntactic processing has thereby come into focus. The present paper presents neuroimaging studies which have imployed the most important experimental paradigms in this respect, namely, the processing of sentences with syntactic violations and of sentences with non-canonical word order. We argue that neuronal language processing can only be explained in a dynamic model. In such a model, not only neuronal localisation, but also temporal information needs to be taken into account. This calls for additional evidence from more time sensitive methods, such as event-related potentials.

1 Thematische Rollen stellen, vereinfacht gesagt, die semantische Seite von Verbergänzungen da. In einem Satz wie Der Junge küsst die Mädchen hat das Verb „küsst” zwei syntaktische Argumente (nämlich ein Subjekt „der Junge” und ein Objekt „die Mädchen”), die man an syntaktischen Kriterien erkennen kann (so hat das Subjekt im Deutschen den Kasus Nominativ und stimmt hinsichtlich Numerus mit dem Verb überein). Darüber hinaus weist „geküsst” auch zwei thematische Rollen zu, die ausdrücken, wer der Handelnde (hier: der Küssende) ist und wer der, dem die Handlung „zustößt” (hier: der Geküsste). Im obigen Beispiel ist der Junge der Handelnde (Agens), die Mädchen Handlungsempfänger (Patiens). Auch wenn Subjekt und Agens in vielen Fällen übereinstimmen, ist es doch wichtig, beide voneinander zu unterscheiden, da es Satzkonstruktionen wie das Passiv gibt, wo beide auseinanderfallen: In Der Junge wird von den Mädchen geküsst ist „der Junge” zwar wiederum Subjekt (da es Nominativ trägt und mit dem Hilfsverb „wurde” hinsichtlich Numerus übereinstimmt), aber nicht Agens, sondern Patiens, schließlich wird er diesmal geküsst.

2 Die bekannteste Einteilung des Kortex, die sich an der Zellarchitektonik orientiert, geht auf den deutschen Neuroanatomen Korbinian Brodmann (1868 - 1918) zurück. Nach ihm werden die resultierenden Abschnitte als „Brodmann-Areale” (abgekürzt „BA”) bezeichnet.

3 Die Aktivierungsfoci einiger der im folgenden referierten Studien, die die Verarbeitung syntaktischer Verletzungen untersucht haben, sind in Abb. [1] a dargestellt.
