Abstract
Objective To estimate the number of dementia patients with onset of cognitive decline before age 70 in the local population of two Bavarian counties (population 308 789 in 2004). This population is interesting for genetic analysis because of the unique resource of the region: a genealogical data bank with six million data sets for the periode 1580 - 1900. Methods We defined local probands as those dementia patients whose parents had also been born there. We contacted all 316 general practitioners (GPs) of the two counties. Results 7.6 % of the GPs took part in the survey. 85 of the 108 screened patients did not fulfill the study criteria. 3 patients dropped out of the study. Nine of the 20 remaining patients had at least one first-degree relative with a history of dementia. Conclusions We estimate that about 160 young dementia patients live in the two counties.
