Die Bedeutung des metabolischen Syndroms im klinischen Alltag - Muss die Diagnose 'metabolisches Syndrom' im Arztbrief stehen?

Der Begriff 'metabolisches Syndrom' bezeichnet ein Cluster von verschiedenen Risikofaktoren für Arteriosklerose und Herz-Kreislauf-Krankheiten. An anderer Stelle in diesem Heft wird auf die Pathogenese, das frühe Auftreten des metabolischen Syndroms schon bei Kindern und Jugendlichen sowie die Aspekte einer modernen Therapie eingegangen. Im Folgenden soll den Fragen nachgegangen werden, warum die Bedeutung des metabolischen Syndroms kontrovers diskutiert wird und ob das Konzept in seiner gegenwärtigen Form für den Kliniker hilfreich ist oder für den Alltagsgebrauch modifiziert werden muss.

The concept 'metabolic syndrome' denotes a plethora of risk factors in arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. In the present issue we shall be dealing with the pathogenesis, the early occurrence of the metabolic syndrome even in children and adolescents and with the aspects of an update treatment. This contribution deals with the question why the significance of the metabolic syndrome is under discussion and whether this concept is clinically helpful in its present form or whether it requires to be modified for general use.
